Ophthalmology covers the eyes and sight: from prescribing glasses to treating glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disease. Many of these conditions progress without pain and without obvious symptoms, so a regular check-up is the most reliable way of catching them early. People also come with everyday complaints: red eyes, watering, blurred vision or eye strain from screen work.

At Centre Mèdic Palafrugell you see the ophthalmologist by appointment and have your follow-ups with the same doctor. Eye examination. A full examination of the eye, including a sight test and a look at the back of the eye. It is the starting point for spotting any change early.
Cataracts. Over the years the lens clouds over and vision blurs. Treatment is surgical: the lens is replaced with an intraocular implant.
Glaucoma. Monitoring of eye pressure and of the optic nerve. Picked up early, the loss of visual field can be slowed down.
Retinal conditions. Diagnosis and follow-up of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and other conditions affecting the back of the eye.
Tear ducts. Assessment and treatment of a constantly watering eye or a blocked tear duct, in adults and in babies.
Squint. Assessment of how the eyes align and surgical correction where needed, particularly in children.
Refractive surgery. Correction of short sight, long sight and astigmatism to reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

Book an appointment if your vision has changed, if you see new floaters or spots, if your eyes are permanently red, or if it has been more than a year since your last check-up. Bring the glasses or lenses you use, any previous reports and the name of any drops you take. How often should I have my eyes checked?

If you have no symptoms and no family history, a check-up every one or two years is usually enough. From the age of 40, and if there is diabetes, high myopia or glaucoma in the family, it is worth going every year: glaucoma and retinal disease progress without pain, and examining the back of the eye is how they are picked up early.

Will I be able to drive after my eye appointment?

Some examinations involve dilating the pupil, which leaves your vision blurred and sensitive to light for a while. If you have been told the back of your eye will be examined, it is better to come with someone or not to count on driving home.
