Cardiology deals with the heart and the vessels that supply it. We assess symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness on the stairs or dizziness, and we manage high blood pressure, arrhythmias, heart failure and ischaemic heart disease.
The cardiologist carries out most tests in the consulting room itself: the ECG and the echocardiogram are done during the appointment and discussed there and then. Holter monitoring and the exercise test are booked for a separate day. Appointments are on Plaça de Catalunya in Palafrugell, and we work with more than 40 health insurers.

- Cardiology consultation. Diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure, arrhythmias, heart failure, ischaemic heart disease and other cardiac conditions.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG). A quick, painless recording of the heart’s electrical activity that picks up arrhythmias or signs of a heart attack.
- Colour Doppler echocardiogram. An ultrasound scan showing the heart beating in real time, so the valves and blood flow can be assessed.
- Holter monitor (24-hour ECG). A portable recorder tracks your heart rhythm for a full day and catches changes that only appear during normal activity.
- Exercise stress test. We look at how the heart responds to exercise, which helps assess ischaemic heart disease and other problems.
- Carotid Doppler ultrasound. Examines the neck arteries that supply the brain and helps assess the risk of a stroke.
- Venous Doppler ultrasound. Scans the leg veins to rule out deep vein thrombosis or to assess venous insufficiency.
Bring any previous cardiology reports, old ECG tracings and a list of your medication. If you are on treatment for blood pressure, note down a few readings taken at home during the previous week: they tell us more than a single reading in the surgery. What should I bring to my first cardiology appointment?

Are the ECG and the echocardiogram done on the day of the appointment?
Yes, both are carried out in the consulting room during the appointment and the cardiologist goes through the results there and then. The 24-hour Holter and the exercise stress test are booked for a separate day, as they need more time and preparation.
Do I have to travel outside Palafrugell for heart tests?
No. The ECG, colour Doppler echocardiogram, Holter monitor, exercise test and Doppler scans are all carried out at the centre on Plaça de Catalunya in Palafrugell, by appointment. We work with more than 40 health insurers and also see private patients.
