3D ultrasound

A 3D ultrasound reconstructs the volume of what it scans instead of showing a single plane. In pregnancy that means seeing your baby's face, hands and movements far more clearly; in other cases, it helps locate a lesion or an abnormality more precisely. It uses sound waves rather than radiation and is painless.

Scans are performed by a doctor specialising in ultrasound, who then writes the report. We see our own patients and referrals from other professionals, always by appointment; bring the referral letter if another doctor requested the scan. We work with most health insurers.

The scan in detail

Services in this specialty: 3D ultrasound

  • Pregnancy scans. Detailed images of your baby's development: facial features, limbs and movement in real time. Your obstetrician will tell you the best week to have it done.
  • Gynaecological assessment. Assessment of the uterus, ovaries and other reproductive structures to investigate fibroids, cysts or other changes.
  • Internal organs and thyroid. Imaging of the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and thyroid when a more precise picture than a conventional scan is needed.
  • Musculoskeletal injuries. Imaging of muscles, tendons and joints to identify injuries, inflammation and other changes.
  • What the scan is like. Gel is applied to the skin and the probe is moved over the area. It takes a few minutes and needs no special preparation, except for abdominal scans.
  • Who performs it. Dr Xavier Targa, a doctor specialising in ultrasound, performs the scan and writes the report with the findings and, where relevant, the next steps.
