Bone densitometry

Densitometry measures the amount of mineral in your bones. It is a quick, painless test: you lie fully dressed on a couch while a moving arm passes over the area using a very low X-ray dose. We usually measure the lumbar spine and the hip and, in some cases, the wrist.

The readings show whether bone density is normal, whether there is osteopenia or whether it has become osteoporosis, and they guide your doctor on fracture risk. The test is run by the same radiology team as our other imaging, so the result is read alongside your medical history. An appointment and a referral are needed; ask us about your insurance cover.

When it is recommended

Women after the menopause. Falling oestrogen levels speed up bone loss. Densitometry can pick up osteoporosis before any fracture happens.
Men and women over 50. From this age bone loss is gradual. Knowing your starting point helps prevent the commonest fractures, such as hip or wrist.
Family history of osteoporosis. If a parent or sibling has been diagnosed with osteoporosis, a first measurement is worthwhile even if you have no symptoms.
Risk factors and treatments. Long-term corticosteroid use, smoking and heavy drinking weaken bone. Regular checks are particularly useful in these cases.
Repeated or low-impact fractures. Breaking a bone in a minor fall is a warning sign. The test helps show whether low bone density is behind it.
Monitoring an ongoing treatment. Repeating the scan after a period shows whether bone density is holding or improving, and lets treatment be adjusted if needed.
